Cave Story+ air dashes onto Steam

The 2004 indie hit Cave Story has had a streak of success ever since Nicalis published the WiiWare version in 2010. Now Cave Story is the indie gaming sensation sweeping the nation, it is literally everywhere. The cute Metroidvania has managed to invade the Wii, DSi, Mac, and even receive a full remake on the 3DS. After such a long journey it has finally made its way to Steam. Cry rehash if you like, but this version of Cave Story isn’t like the original version released for free several years ago. This is Cave Story+, an enhanced version otherwise only found on the Mac App Store. It includes everything from the WiiWare version and more. The list of features include…

  • Original (320×240) graphics and upgraded “HD” graphics
  • Remastered music as well as the original soundtrack
  • Mix-and-match new/old artwork and music!
  • Six new play modes (including Wind Fortress, Nemesis Mode, Boss Rush and more!)
  • Over 20 epic boss battles through Mimiga Island
  • 15 levels to explore in the vast world
  • 10 unique weapons to find and upgrade
  • USB controller compatibility
  • Four unique endings
  • Future content updates

The big question is if this upgrade is truly worth double, or for some triple, dipping for. Ultimately it’s up to the buyer to decide, but if you love Cave Story as much as I do then buying this fantastic game again is absolutely worth it. The addition of the lost Wind Fortress alone warrants my purchase. The game is only $8.49 this week ($9.99 afterwards) so if you’re going to buy it do it now! Who knows, with the support Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya might even start a new project.
