Game over: press X to correct and re-exist

When filling out introductory blurbs, I always found the “describe yourself” column difficult–something that makes me want to get my genes sequenced and then cop out the entire section by sticking the genome in. Well, all except for the “hobbies”

New Devil Survivor 2 trailer reminds us Devil Survivor 2 exists

The original Devil Survivor is notable because it is the game I own the most copies of (three), and because it was a sparklingly brilliant strategy RPG for the Nintendo DS. A combination of Japanese RPG series Growlanser with Persona

Top tier game journalists join forces with Vox Media

Up until now, it had been unfortunate to see such big names in game journalism like Russ Pitts and Justin McElroy resigning from their posts on the likes of the Escapist and Joystiq. Those joining them included other veterans from Joystiq like Chris Grant along with Brian Crecente, former EIC at Kotaku. It had seemed that game journalism had lost many of its best, but now we know what they’re all up to.

These venerable game journalists will be banding together to form the team behind a new gaming site headed by Vox Media (which I envision as some kind of giant robot). Vox currently maintains tech website The Verge and a sports portal SB Nation, but will be expanding its horizons into the realm of gaming. Currently we don’t know much about this new website, but as McElroy puts it,

“I, and a big team of talented folks, are going to be building the best video game site ever.”

Russ Pitts gives further credit on his blog and somewhat of a timeframe for the site itself,

“It’s going to be some time before we can actually get to work writing and whatnot, and even more time before we have an actual website to call our own. Vox is giving us a year to design and build exactly the site we want and to get it up and running…

Metal Gear Solid's postmodern legacy: part 1

“What was that noise?” I love the Metal Gear Solid series. Despite it’s overindulgence of cutscenes and increasingly nonsensical plots, I love the series to death. I tell you this so that you know my next statement is going to

Games should be fun for everyone: In response to the 'Gay Drake' backlash

Games are not inclusive. Games pander to a very specific demographic: 18+ heterosexual males. This is not debatable. The landscape may be changing, but for the most part triple AAA mainstream games are engineered to speak to a particular group

Fixing Reviews: The Lying Score

Review scores are tricky; they are not for everybody. For a scoring system to have any worth, it must have consistency. Not everybody is ready for that. You can’t call a game a master-piece only to call it a disappointment at the end of the year. Review scores must also be honest and, believe it or not, even less people are ready for that. Here, I’m not talking about the flawed notion some outlets have that the average between 0 and 10 is 8. That’s just being mathematically deprived. Instead, I’m talking about Metacritic, Amazon, App Stores and whatever other place that aggregates scores from users in order to present a single information: that the cosmos has voted and decided that game X is a 8.6 out of 10.

Guess what? They are all lying.

They are lying because they encourage users to lie in their reviews. Yes, that means the liar is ultimately you, Mr. User.

Review: Rock of Ages

Something went wrong here. Let’s not talk about the Terry Gilliamisms. Those are lovely, and why you’ve already played the game. If you haven’t, and you appreciate Monty Python, here is my six word review for you: go watch Life
