London Philharmonic Covers "Greatest Video Game Music"
“Oh yeah? Well, if games aren’t art, how come video game music was covered by the London Philharmonic?” Sorry, internet, but we’re gonna be hearing that one a lot. But who cares? I can’t wait to hear the likes of Nobuo Uematsu, Hans Zimmer, and Harry Gregson Freaking Williams covered by one of the most prestigious orchestras in the world! This new album from the London Philharmonic will contain over twenty tracks including music from Final Fantasy, Bioshock, Legend of Zelda, and Mass Effect 2. There’s also a few oddball choices like Advent Rising and Angry Birds. It’s nice to see the track list mostly dominated by more recent games. As much as I love the 8-bit tracks we all grew up with, I think gaming culture tends to cling to that era a bit too much. While the games industry may not be at the height of cultural impact right now with online passes, ignorant claims of violent impact, and the dominance of the brown shooter, there’s some amazing work being produced right now that is truly incredible. While the album art may be a reference to said brown shooters, it’s damned pretty. The Greatest Video Game Music will be available on November 8th. Check out the tracklist! 1. It’s pretty clearly aimed at “music from the biggest games” rather than “the best music,” but orchestras do these cash grabs all the time (they need the money) and I certainly don’t hold it against them. And some great themes on there, certainly. But last I checked, Modern Warfare wasn’t famous for its tunes.
The Sons of Liberty Theme is the best video game song of all time in my opinion. Too bad this list has been ruined by the inclusion of the song from angry birds.
