Dark Soul's Exciting New Feature Is Called The 'Covenant'

Fans of the PS3 exclusive Demon’s Souls will be pleased to learn that the difficulty level has not been toned down for its spiritual successor Dark Souls. The game promises to be a bigger and more polished dungeon crawler than Demon’s Souls and will allow be available cross platform.

From Software’s Hidetaka Miyazaki touched on a few interesting components on the upcoming title in an interview with G4.

The very unique, indirect online system from Demon’s Souls is present in force here. You don’t really get to interact with other players, but you can see and learn from their experience. A new feature that will have a huge influence on things, however, is called the “covenant.” It’s a belief or pledge that players will be able to absorb, and it will help them determine what kind of role they want to play in the game and what sort of actions they want to take against other players and characters. It’s a bit hard to explain in words – perhaps it’s easier for players to simply experience and feel it. But it’s going to be a central aspect of the online play and will hopefully give players a new experience.”

From the sound of things, Dark Souls promises to provide even more options to customize your character while maintaining the online features that made Demon’s Souls such a success.

Dark Souls is scheduled to release on October 4th, 2011.

I would love co-op as well but I don’t think they have any plans to implement it. It’s be nice to have a team against some of the tougher bosses.
