Modern Warfare 3 GM Not Impressed By Battlefield Franchise

The developers behind Modern Warfare 3 may have 99 problems but Battlefield 3 ain’t one. Glen Schofield, general manager of MW3 co-developer Sledgehammer Games, has been singing the praises of their own military shooter as the release date for rival Battlefield 3 is just a week away. To douse the flames of excitement for Battlefield 3, Schofield made it clear that he does not see the title as a threat to his company. “Let’s just say that I still use Modern Warfare 2 as my competitor. I need to make sure that the millions of people that played Modern Warfare 2 will pick up this game, notice that it’s better, notice that it’s bigger, that there’s more in it, that there’s more polish, all that stuff. That’s what I’m concerned with – this community.”

Schofield claims that he had not heard of the Battlefield franchise until “five or six months ago,” when Battlefield 3’s marketing campaign began to build up steam. Throughout the summer, EA has been showcasing the capabilities of its stunning new Frost Engine that has shown graphic superiority to Call of Duty‘s latest games. After a confusing explanation of how game engines can be like a Porsche or spaghetti, Schofield appeared fed up with the comparisons, “I’ve said this before – I’m not shipping an engine, I’m shipping a game. So that’s why I’m going to talk about the game. You can talk about your engine all you want. It’s not fun.”

When asked about the lack of a MW3 beta, Schofield sidestepped the question. “Someone asked me that the other day. This game is so big between the campaign, the Spec-Ops and the multiplayer, there was so much work to do that I don’t know whether it hit anyone’s mind or not. We had XP and XP was in itself a way for 1,000s of people to play the game and for us to look over their shoulder and see how they were doing and how they liked it and that was really good.”

Both games are expected to be titans throughout the holiday season in the sales charts. We can only hope that they showcase the same amount of competition in game play as their development teams do in real life. Battlefield 3 will be available for release October 25th while Modern Warfare 3 can be purchased November 8th.

    SO MUCH MISSINFORMATION.

    What he said is this

“I use mw2 as my competitor i wanna make a game as good or better than mw2″

He aims to deliver a solid mw2 sequel not battling cod”

Also he said that their engine is pretty good and capable of easilly been tweaked and change stuff in the level without messing up other stuff and put mw2 and mw3 next to each other and you will see the improvments on lighting, textures and geometry.

He also said that bf franchise did not have a strong enough marketign till recnetly which is 100% true.

Who the fuck is the author of this article??

No where in the article has Mr Schofield said he is less impressed with BF3,stop creating shitty articles with misleading names like MW3 GM not impressed with BF3,dont create a rift within game developers/studios/publishers turd!!

The excerpts are from an interview where Mr. Schofield was asked “Do you view Battlefield 3 as a particularly dangerous competitor for Modern Warfare?” Schofield responded in a way in which he would not acknowledge them as a competitor. On top of that, he denied knowledge of the Battlefield franchise altogether before a few months ago, which is hard to believe based on his admission to following metacritic scores (Battlefield 2 got a 91) and the fact that their games are so similar. You may interpret this differently than I have but to call the article misleading is simply untrue. As for your claim that I am creating a rift within developers, it has been pretty apparent that EA and Activision clearly did not like one another long before I wrote this news piece. Google EA and Activision and you will be shown an endless stream of animosity between the two gaming giants, including a 400 million dollar lawsuit.

typical marketing technique to tell the community they aren’t afraid of the competition so as to reassure their fans they have nothing to worry about when in reality, they are terrified they are going to lose A LOT of fans and money to DICE. They know their game is getting stale and they know the fans know it. they’ll say anything they can to keep those fans.

Here’s a comment from a jealous Battlefield fanboy. Copy and pasted from N4G.

“”””Schofield claims that he had not heard of the Battlefield franchise until “five or six months ago,” when Battlefield 3′s marketing campaign began to build up steam.””

LOL…..Complete Bullcrap. Are we really supposed to believe that a games developer like yourself hasn’t heard of Battlefield…come on man that was the worst lie I’ve ever heard. He’s probably been crapping himself about Battlefield 3 since it was announced, now knowing they have to work even harder (I know…GASP) on MW3 and actually try and put some effort into it.

Are these guys so far up there own arses that they think there game is BEST EVER because it gains a lot of sales. Most people buy it for social interaction Schofield, so they don’t feel like the odd one out in school, college, what ever….not for quality. I mean look at this…

“This game is so big between the campaign, the Spec-Ops and the multiplayer, there was so much work to do that I don’t know whether it hit anyone’s mind or not”

Big…..you think the game is big, you could probably fit MW and MW2 on the disc knowing how bare and short the game actually is. With all three MW games you would get a longer single player and probably the same multiplayer since it’s mostly the same in all three games. Uncharted 3, Skyrim, Batman AC, Assassins Creed and even Battlefield 3 are BIG games because they’ll keep you occupied for longer.

All the Call of Duty franchise really is, is a huge social gimmick for social interaction.””””

  6. I think it’s really weird that EA is trying to set these up as comparable giants preparing to battle head-to-head, given that BF3 is PC lead and MW3 is console lead. Are they just hoping that the gutted version of BF3 will still be better than MW3 and win gamers who primarily game on coles over anyway (I mean, it’s not like MW3 has 64 players)? Are they mostly interested in getting PC gamers to abandon the MW franchise, even though those are probably only a third of the buyers? I can’t tell.

  7. GT Walsh

    Dylan,
The Call of Duty games are clearly the most profitable titles of the last few years so even a third of those buyers is a significant number. I personally prefer Halo, but if EA or Activision starts throwing in Warthogs I might cross over.

WHAT? that fact that he “hadnt heard about the bf franchise before 6-6months ago is bullshit! That statement not only made everything else he said bullshit, it makes him look REALLY bad. What kind of GM doesn’t know and analyze the competition for ways to improve your own games? Does he live in a fucking cave? And the opening statement copied the 100 articles for bfs 99 problems trailer. Come up with something original!

    • GT Walsh

There are 100 articles that copied my opening statement? I’m honored.

Dont know why people expect BF3 to sell really well, they will be lucky to make their money back after that bombarding ad campaign! Uncharted will probably sell more as an exclusive which will be just sad! But thats no surprise, they did the same shit with MOH and boy did that game bomb!! Saddos, same thing will happen with BF3

    • Depends on what the budget was, but comparing MOH to BF3 is insincere – the former was a reboot of a series that had been surpassed and made obsolete by COD, the latter is a beloved multiplayer series not at all comparable to COD that has yet to be topped.

Sure are some butt-hurt MW fanboys in here. Don’t see why, this isn’t really bashing MW at all. It could arguably be seen as calling its manager out on his bullshit, but I see no mean comments about the game itself.
So let me be a change of pace and say thank you GT Walsh for this piece of written word and the amused chuckle it gave me.
