Grand Theft Auto III Coming to Mobile Platforms This Fall

Grand Theft Auto III turns ten this month, so its fitting that Rockstar release the game on the only big platforms its yet to inhabit (aside from anything Nintendo, of course): the iOS and Android.

GTA III marked the developer’s first foray into 3D sandbox gameplay, first arriving on the PlayStation 2 on October 22, 2001, followed by a PC release the next May. The title also marked the beginning of the GTA III canon that spanned across 5 games, concluding with 2006’s Vice City Stories.

Rockstar founder and GTA III director Sam Houser reflected on how the game helped define the company, stating “it helped set the vision for the company, and we have been expanding on those possibilities with every game ever since.”

GTA III is now available nearly everywhere, making its way to the Mac via Steam late last year.

The mobile iteration of the game will be optimized for the iPad 2, iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy, amongst others, and will be available this fall.
