New Mortal Kombat Film in the Works

You don’t need to me tell you that Reptile being made of bugs and Shao Kahn transforming into a squealing hydra, while hilarious, proved to everyone in the 90’s that Mortal Kombat films should not be made. Fast forward to now in a world where director Kevin Tancharoen has treated the internet to his unique vision of the Mortal Kombat universe with the short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth and its subsequent web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy. Warner Bros., current owner of the Mortal Kombat brand, is impressed. So impressed, in fact, that they’ve given the talented director an opportunity to direct a brand new, full-length film for the fighting game franchise. New Line Cinema will be producing the film. Since the original purpose for Rebirth was supposed to be a pitch to Warner Bros. for such a project, I believe Tancharoen can now properly consider it a success.

Considering that Tancharoen likely owes some of the credit of his new film’s existence to the damned-well deserved success of the recent Mortal Kombat reboot, it’s likely that it won’t be an exact full-length version of Rebirth. When working with a big studio like New Line Cinema, some pressure will be almost certainly be applied to make sure it appeals to more than just the fans of Legacy and Rebirth. That said, we can at least hope for a combination of the best of both worlds. To get a taste of Tancharoen’s interesting take on the franchise, you can check out the concept trailer for Rebirth here.

Legacy was actually a lot better than I expected outside of the bunk Johnny Cage episodes. I hope they keep the techno themed Mortal Kombat song for some part of the movie.
