Tomb Raider and Crysis 2 Win 3D World CG Awards

The mega team of Cystal Dynamics and Square Enix are a year away from releasing the highly anticipated Tomb Raider reboot yet they have already collected one of the most prestigious awards in their field. 3D World magazine has selected the best of 2011’s CG entertainment industry and proclaimed Tomb Raider’s “Turning Point” as the pinnacle of video game cinematics.

Karl Stewart, the global brand director for Tomb Raider and director of the award winning trailer, was thrilled by the recognition of his team’s hard work. “The three-minute trailer took over a year to develop, and is the product of a very successful partnership between the Redwood City videogame developer Crystal Dynamics and the Square Enix Visual Works Studios out of Tokyo. To see our collaborative effort recognised as a leader in the video game space is quite an honour.”

The gritty reboot showcases a younger Lara Croft tasked with surviving a brutal shipwreck and ends with her bloodied and alone on an ominous island.

Not surprisingly, Crytek picked up the award for their work on Crysis 2. The sequel to the PC blockbuster won best CG graphics of the year and proved to the world that they could bring a visually stunning game to consoles.

Cevat Yerli, the CEO and founder of Crytek commented on the achievement. “Winning the first CG Award for Crysis 2 in the category of best in-game graphics is an exceptional honour for us, since it rewards the hard work that our team is doing every day to achieve our, admittedly, ambitious goals. With the release of the PC-exclusive Crysis 1 back in 2007, we wanted to push our technology as far as we could. The fact that the game is still, to this day, being used for graphics benchmarks underlines our success in doing so and is the best credit that we can ask for.”

The trailer shows New York City in utter chaos as malicious aliens block every avenue of escape.
