If You Play Dark Souls Early, From Software Will Find You

Found you!

For those unaware of the awesome online features of Dark Souls, players are faced with three options when they are killed. They can attempt to recover their body Diablo style by fighting their way to it with half health, join another player’s game and assist them with a boss battle, or invade another player’s game and kill him. Japanese gamers who have obtained copies of Dark Souls before its release date due to a retailer error have begun reporting that their game worlds are being invaded by maxed out black phantoms (dead player characters who chose the third option) who proceed to murder them relentlessly.  Namco Bandai has not confirmed these reports as of yet.

It’s tragic that people who received the game early by no fault of theirs are basically not able to enjoy the game until its street date, but I get the feeling that this has been going on long before these reports. If I had to guess, From Software has been doing this for a while and we only have heard of it now because pirates generally don’t go public with this sort of thing. The debatable motives of piracy aside, I love when game developers screw with pirates. Whether it’s rendering Batman’s glide ability useless or replacing Michael Jackson’s music with vuvuzelas, this stuff cracks me up.

While my first impulse is to agree, I posted an article critical of this tactic at my blog.
